Pro Tip: Use "Brim Ears" for rectangular parts with sharp corners. It provides adhesion where needed while minimizing cleanup.
Brim Settings
Extra material attached to model edges for improved bed adhesion.
What is a Brim?
A brim is a single layer of material printed around and attached to the base of your model. It increases the surface area touching the bed, improving adhesion and preventing corners from lifting (warping). After printing, the brim is peeled or cut away.
Brim Type
- Parameter
brim_type- Options
- No brim, Outer brim only, Inner brim only, Outer and inner brim
- Description
- Where to place the brim relative to the model.
| Type | Best For |
|---|---|
| Outer brim only | Most common, general adhesion |
| Inner brim only | Parts with holes, inner adhesion |
| Outer and inner | Maximum adhesion, complex shapes |
Brim Width
- Parameter
brim_width- Unit
- mm
- Default
- 5mm
- Description
- Width of the brim extending from the model. Wider brim = more adhesion.
Brim-Object Gap
- Parameter
brim_separation- Unit
- mm
- Default
- 0mm
- Description
- Gap between brim and object. Small gap (0.1mm) makes removal easier while maintaining adhesion.
Brim Ears
- Parameter
brim_ears- Type
- Boolean
- Description
- Only add brim at sharp corners where warping is most likely, not around the entire model.
Brim Ears Max Angle
- Parameter
brim_ears_max_angle- Unit
- Degrees (°)
- Default
- 125°
- Description
- Maximum corner angle to receive brim ears. Sharper corners below this angle get brims.
When to Use a Brim
| Scenario | Brim Needed? | Recommended Width |
|---|---|---|
| Small base area | Yes | 5-10mm |
| Sharp corners (ABS) | Yes | 8-15mm or ears |
| Tall thin models | Yes | 10-15mm |
| PLA on textured PEI | Usually no | 3-5mm if needed |
| PETG | Rarely | 3-5mm if needed |
Brim Removal Tips
- Add separation: 0.1-0.15mm gap makes peeling much easier
- Use a knife: Score along the model edge first for clean removal
- Deburring tool: Clean up any remaining brim material
- Sand if needed: Light sanding removes any brim remnants
