Pro Tip: For cylindrical objects like vases, use "Random" seam position to distribute seams evenly rather than creating one visible vertical line.
Seam Painting
Control where layer seams (Z-seams) appear on your prints.
What are Seams?
Every layer of a 3D print has a start and end point where the extruder begins and finishes. This creates a visible line called the "seam" or "Z-seam." Seam painting lets you control where this seam appears.
Accessing the Tool
Select your model and click the Seam Painting tool in the left toolbar, or press P.
Painting Modes
| Mode | Color | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Enforce | Blue | Prefer placing seams in these areas |
| Block | Red | Avoid placing seams in these areas |
| Erase | - | Remove any painting |
How to Use
- Set "Seam position" to "Painted" in process settings
- Open the Seam Painting tool
- Paint areas where you want seams (enforce) in blue
- Paint areas where you don't want seams (block) in red
- Slice and check the seam line in preview
Common Strategies
- Hide in corners: Paint the inside of corners blue - seams hide well there
- Align along edges: Paint a vertical edge to create a clean seam line
- Protect visible surfaces: Paint visible front faces red
- Back of model: Paint the back of figurines blue
Seam Position Settings
In process settings, the seam position option affects how painting works:
| Setting | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Painted | Uses your painted preferences |
| Nearest | Starts closest to previous seam (may override painting) |
| Aligned | Tries to align seams vertically |
| Random | Distributes seams randomly (ignores painting) |
| Rear | Places seams at back of model |
Tips for Better Seams
- Sharp corners: Seams are less visible in sharp inside corners
- Vertical edges: Seams align well along vertical edges
- Avoid smooth surfaces: Seams stand out on flat, smooth areas
- Consider orientation: Rotate the model to put seams on the back
- Use wipe: Enable "Wipe on loops" to reduce seam visibility
Seam Visibility Factors
Beyond painting, these settings affect seam visibility:
- Retraction: Good retraction reduces seam blobs
- Coasting: Reduces pressure at seam end point
- Wipe: Cleans nozzle during retraction
- Pressure advance: Improves extrusion consistency at seams
