Note: Pressure advance values are material-specific. Calibrate for each filament type and brand for best results. Use OrcaSlicer's Pressure Advance calibration test.
Filament Overrides
Override printer and process settings on a per-filament basis.
About Overrides
Filament overrides allow you to change printer or process settings specifically for this filament. These settings take precedence over the corresponding printer or process profile settings.
Retraction Length Override
- Parameter
filament_retraction_length- Unit
- Millimeters (mm)
- Description
- Override the retraction length for this specific filament. Useful when a material needs different retraction than your printer default.
| Material | Typical Override | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| PLA | Use printer default | Standard behavior |
| PETG | -0.5mm less | PETG is stringier, less retraction helps |
| TPU | -50% or disable | Flexible, retraction causes jams |
| Nylon | +1-2mm more | Very stringy, needs more retraction |
Retraction Speed Override
- Parameter
filament_retract_speed- Unit
- mm/s
- Description
- Override retraction speed for this filament.
Deretraction Speed Override
- Parameter
filament_deretract_speed- Unit
- mm/s
- Description
- Speed at which filament is pushed back after retraction.
Z Hop Override
- Parameter
filament_retract_lift- Unit
- Millimeters (mm)
- Description
- Override Z-hop height when retracted. Some materials benefit from different Z-hop values.
Pressure Advance Override
- Parameter
filament_pressure_advance- Unit
- Seconds
- Range
- 0.0 - 2.0 (typically 0.02-0.10)
- Description
- Override the pressure advance value for this filament. Different materials compress differently and need different PA values.
Wipe Override
- Parameter
filament_wipe- Type
- Boolean
- Description
- Enable or disable wiping while retracting for this filament.
Print Speed Override
- Parameter
filament_print_speed- Description
- Some filaments may need global speed adjustments. This can limit max speeds for the material.
When to Use Overrides
- TPU/Flexible filaments: Reduce or disable retraction
- High-speed PLA: May need different PA values
- Specialty filaments: Wood-fill, metal-fill need custom settings
- Brand variations: Same material type from different brands may need adjustments
Important: Overrides only apply when the specific filament profile is selected. Make sure you're using the correct filament profile for your print.
