Tip: Always calibrate flow ratio for each filament brand/color as they can vary significantly.
Material Settings
Material settings define the properties of your filament, including temperatures, flow rates, and cooling parameters.
Settings Categories

Filament type, vendor, color, and diameter.
Flow Ratio & PA
Extrusion multiplier and pressure advance settings.
Temperatures
Nozzle, bed, and chamber temperature settings.
Volumetric Speed
Maximum volumetric flow rate limits.
Material Cooling
Part cooling fan speeds and thresholds.
Setting Overrides
Material-specific process setting overrides.
Common Filament Types
| Material | Nozzle Temp | Bed Temp | Cooling | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PLA | 190-220°C | 45-60°C | High (100%) | Easy to print, good for beginners |
| PETG | 220-250°C | 70-85°C | Medium (50-70%) | Strong, slightly flexible |
| ABS | 230-260°C | 90-110°C | Low (0-30%) | Requires enclosure, prone to warping |
| TPU | 220-250°C | 45-60°C | Low (30-50%) | Flexible, slow printing speed |
| ASA | 240-260°C | 90-110°C | Low (0-30%) | UV resistant, outdoor use |
| Nylon | 240-270°C | 70-90°C | Low (0-30%) | Very strong, hygroscopic |
Flow Ratio
The flow ratio (extrusion multiplier) adjusts how much filament is extruded.
- Default Value
- 1.0 (100%)
- Typical Range
- 0.9 - 1.1
- Calibration
- Use OrcaSlicer's built-in flow calibration test
Pressure Advance
Pressure advance compensates for pressure buildup in the extruder during acceleration and deceleration.
- Direct Drive
- 0.02 - 0.08
- Bowden (short)
- 0.3 - 0.6
- Bowden (long)
- 0.6 - 1.0
Volumetric Speed Limit
The maximum amount of filament (in mm³/s) that can flow through the hotend.
| Material | Standard Hotend | High-Flow Hotend |
|---|---|---|
| PLA | 12-15 mm³/s | 20-30 mm³/s |
| PETG | 8-12 mm³/s | 15-20 mm³/s |
| ABS | 10-12 mm³/s | 18-25 mm³/s |
| TPU | 3-5 mm³/s | 5-8 mm³/s |
Cooling Settings
Part cooling affects layer adhesion, bridging, and overhangs.
- Min Fan Speed: Minimum cooling during slow sections
- Max Fan Speed: Maximum cooling during overhangs/bridges
- Bridge Fan Speed: Specific speed for bridging moves
- Disable Fan for First Layers: Helps with bed adhesion
- Slow Down Below Layer Time: Minimum layer time before slowing down
