Print Quality Issues

Stringing / Oozing

Thin strings of filament between parts of your print.

Solutions:

  • Increase retraction distance (0.5-2mm for direct drive, 4-8mm for Bowden)
  • Increase retraction speed (25-45 mm/s)
  • Lower printing temperature by 5-10°C
  • Enable "Wipe while retracting" in travel settings
  • Reduce travel speed over printed areas
  • Ensure filament is dry (especially PETG, Nylon, TPU)

Layer Separation / Delamination

Layers don't bond properly and separate or crack.

Solutions:

  • Increase printing temperature by 5-10°C
  • Reduce cooling fan speed (especially for ABS, ASA)
  • Increase flow rate slightly
  • Reduce layer height
  • Ensure no drafts or temperature fluctuations (use an enclosure for ABS)
  • Check for wet filament - dry if needed

Rough or Bumpy Top Surface

The top surface has ridges, gaps, or an uneven texture.

Solutions:

  • Increase top solid layers (4-5 minimum)
  • Enable ironing for smooth top surfaces
  • Increase infill percentage (higher infill = better support for top)
  • Calibrate flow rate
  • Reduce printing speed for top layers

Ghosting / Ringing

Ripple patterns on walls, especially near corners and edges.

Solutions:

  • Reduce print speed and acceleration
  • Tighten belts on your printer
  • Enable input shaper / resonance compensation (Klipper)
  • Reduce jerk settings
  • Check for loose components on the printer

Elephants Foot

The first few layers are wider than the rest of the print.

Solutions:

  • Increase Z offset slightly (nozzle too close to bed)
  • Lower bed temperature after first layer
  • Enable "Elephant foot compensation" in OrcaSlicer
  • Reduce first layer flow rate

Adhesion Problems

Print Not Sticking to Bed

The print detaches from the bed during printing or doesn't stick at all.

Solutions:

  • Level/trammel the bed properly
  • Decrease Z offset (nozzle closer to bed)
  • Increase first layer line width (120-150%)
  • Increase bed temperature:
    • PLA: 50-60°C
    • PETG: 70-80°C
    • ABS: 90-110°C
  • Clean the bed with isopropyl alcohol
  • Use adhesion aids (glue stick, hairspray, or dedicated bed adhesive)
  • Add a brim or raft in slicer settings
  • Slow down first layer speed (15-25 mm/s)

Warping

Corners lift off the bed during printing.

Solutions:

  • Use an enclosure (essential for ABS, ASA, PC)
  • Increase bed temperature
  • Disable or reduce cooling fan for first layers
  • Add a brim (8-15mm width)
  • Use a raft for severe warping
  • Apply adhesion aids to the bed surface
  • Ensure no drafts in the printing area

Print Stuck Too Well

Print won't come off the bed without damage.

Solutions:

  • Wait for bed to cool completely
  • Flex the build plate (if removable)
  • Increase Z offset slightly for future prints
  • Reduce first layer flow rate
  • Lower bed temperature

Software Issues

OrcaSlicer Won't Start / Crashes

Solutions:

  • Windows: Install Visual C++ Redistributable
  • macOS: Right-click and select "Open" on first launch
  • Linux: Make AppImage executable: chmod +x OrcaSlicer*.AppImage
  • Update graphics drivers
  • Try running as administrator
  • Delete config folder and restart:
    • Windows: %APPDATA%\OrcaSlicer
    • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/OrcaSlicer
    • Linux: ~/.config/OrcaSlicer

Slicing Takes Too Long / Freezes

Solutions:

  • Reduce model complexity (decimate high-poly models)
  • Disable "Detect thin walls" for complex models
  • Increase layer height
  • Reduce support density
  • Close other applications to free memory
  • Update to the latest OrcaSlicer version

Printer Not Connecting

Network printers:

  • Ensure printer and computer are on the same network
  • Check firewall settings
  • Verify IP address in printer settings
  • Try manual IP entry instead of auto-discovery

USB connection:

  • Try a different USB cable (data cable, not charge-only)
  • Install drivers if required (CH340/CH341 for many Chinese printers)
  • Check COM port in Device Manager (Windows)

G-code Preview Shows Errors

Missing layers, unexpected paths, or visual glitches in preview.

Solutions:

  • Repair the 3D model (use built-in repair or external tools like Meshmixer)
  • Re-export the model from CAD software
  • Check for non-manifold edges or holes in the mesh
  • Try different slicing settings
  • Update OrcaSlicer to the latest version

Extrusion Problems

Under-Extrusion

Gaps in walls, weak infill, or missing layers.

Solutions:

  • Calibrate e-steps on your printer
  • Increase flow rate in slicer
  • Check for clogged nozzle - do a cold pull
  • Increase printing temperature
  • Reduce print speed
  • Check extruder gear tension
  • Verify filament diameter in slicer matches actual filament

Over-Extrusion

Blobs, rough surfaces, or dimensional inaccuracy.

Solutions:

  • Reduce flow rate (start with 95%)
  • Calibrate e-steps
  • Lower printing temperature
  • Check filament diameter setting

Extruder Clicking / Skipping

The extruder motor makes clicking sounds and skips steps.

Solutions:

  • Nozzle too close to bed - increase Z offset
  • Clogged nozzle - clean or replace
  • Printing too fast for hotend capacity - reduce speed
  • Temperature too low - increase by 5-10°C
  • Extruder tension too high or too low
  • PTFE tube issue (gap or degraded)

Getting More Help

If you're still experiencing issues:

When reporting issues: Include your OrcaSlicer version, operating system, printer model, and attach your .3mf project file if possible. Screenshots and photos of failed prints are extremely helpful!
